The first thing to look at in a game is how the primary weapons function. Are they realistic, do they have good ballistic trajectories and spreads? What factors effect the accuracy and spread? What sort of penetrating and hit power does it have? The evaluation of the primary weapon won't take very long, but will pay off greatly in the long run, know your weapon, and it will work better for you.

You can do the weapon evaluation in a server, or against the computer in single player.

The first thing to test in a new game is the primary weapon bullet spreads. Here are some screenshots of the FPS Black Hawk Down from Nova Logic. The gun used was a CAR 15 on auto, close range, scope up/down. You can see the difference in the shot spreads.

At close range, the recoil make the gun travel about 2 feet up. The spread is less than a few inches.

At close range, the recoil make the gun travel about 2 feet up, and the scope down creates a pattern of about 2 feet across.

At 100 yards, the recoil goes from the bottom of building to top. The spread is about 6 feet across.

By evaluating the spread of the primary weapon, it can help you decide which way to use it. If it's a long range spray and pray, scope up would be best. At short range spray and pray, scope down might work better. You can also see where to start your fire, in order to sweep across your opponent and get a score.
